III.

"I need you to relax. It'll be much easier this way."

Beth could hardly move. Even if she had not been strapped down, she was too drained to do much more than keep her eyes open. That did not stop her from tensing up whenever he came near her.

"Just a few more days," he said as he wiped the skin of her arm clean. "Then you'll go back home, and this will be nothing more than a nightmare."

Beth's lazy gaze narrowed.

"I've performed this procedure countless times. It's perfectly safe." He paused. "It is ashame what happened to your hair... unexpected." He stuck a needle in Beth's arm, but she no longer flinched at the pinch. "You'll be a special one."

Beth could feel the light. She could feel it seeping into her skin. It was uncomfortable, and it seemed to build into a headache. If she opened her eyes she knew the light would blind her, but it didn't occur to her that she had the choice to keep them shut.

"Beth?" she heard.

Instinctively, her eyes snapped open. Bright light flooded into her eyes. She could see, but it hurt. Quickly she buried her face in her pillow.

"Beth!" It was the voice of her uncle, she could tell.

"Too bright!" she moaned. She heard a click and knew that her uncle had turned off the light. Beth removed the pillow from her face.

Uncle Frank stared at her. She could barely make out his expression in the darkness. It was confused, relieved, and also a little scared. Beth blinked, but nothing changed. "What?" she asked.

"What?" her uncle responded with an edge of mocking in his tone. "Beth, what happened?"

"What do you mean?"

Uncle Frank bit his lip, then turned the bedside light on again. The light seered into Beth's eyes and made her head feel like it would explode. She cried out in pain and her uncle quickly shut off the light.

"What's with that?" he asked. "What's wrong with light? And why is your hair..." he trailed off. "What happened to you? Where were you?"

"I don't know what you're talking about, Uncle Frank, I--" Beth stopped. It hadn't even occurred to her what might be happening. Part of her maybe believed she was in her bedroom, but she knew she wasn't. "I'm--" The smell, the sounds... even if this wasn't a place she frequently visitied, she couldn't mistake the atmosphere. "I'm in the hospital." Her uncle nodded. "When did this happen? How... why..." she stumbled over questions she needed to ask.

"You really can't remember?" Uncle Frank asked. Beth shook her head. "What is the last thing you remember?"

"I don't know..."

"You were missing," he said, "for almost a week."
I don't know. I don't really like this. I like the story, and I just feel like writing it, but I don't like this particular thing.

But here's the next chapter. Hopefully it'll get better.
